A beautiful addition to regular correspondence, it is also ideal for party invitations, thank-you notes and important announcements. The stamp features a horizontal graphic illustration of brilliantly colored flowers rendered in ink and gouache paint. Derry Noyes, an art director for USPS, designed the stamp using an existing illustration by artist Kim Parker. The problem, of course, is that Christmas décor ideas abound.

Keep the Focus on Coziness With a Neutral-Packed Palette

You can mix and match colors, bauble styles and all the rustic Christmas decor you'd like to create an artfully thrown-together look. Go for white or pale wood, and then add pops of color with red or deep green. Give your room a festive feel with candles, and evergreen sprigs on every surface and of course a Scandi-approved Christmas tree. Go for dark colored baubles – black, navy, dark green – will all create a dramatic feel. If you have a dark living room already, go for a contrasting color to create a striking look.

Display a Vintage Santa

Sure, you might not have room for a tree in there, but copy this Christmas decorating idea and hang some foliage around a doorway, in your cabinets and over your lighting. Add some cute hanging decorations on your handles too to complete the look. We've said it before and we will say it again, an empty mantel at Christmas is a sad one, and one of the biggest Christmas decorating mistakes you can make. They are so easy to decorate too, just pick some greenery, add some candles and there you go, your very own marvellous masterpiece.

THE CHRISTMAS DREAM TEAM

Hebe joined the Real Homes team in early 2018 as Staff Writer before moving to the Livingetc team in 2021 where she took on a role as Digital Editor. She loves boho and 70's style and is a big fan of Instagram as a source of interiors inspiration. When she isn't writing about interiors, she is renovating her own spaces – be it wallpapering a hallway, painting kitchen cupboards or converting a van. If you have left your Christmas decor a bit last minute, or have neglected a room you want to add some quick festiveness too, a mantel piece is the best place to decorate. Over the past years, have you learned how to make a Christmas wreath? If so, then you definitely need to hang it with pride!

Clip Art

We love the soft, vintage-inspired look, and we are up for sporting what is one of the cutest throwback Christmas decorating ideas around. This colorful, chateau-style decor remains demure because of the muted tones and organic materials. Opt for linen tablecloths and position your dining tables near ornately-decorated walls in the home.

Decorate the Pass-Through

By stocking up on shiny items—like mirrors, metallic ornaments, and bits of crystal—you can reflect light and color around the room. Though you may not realize it, your backyard is a treasure trove of holiday décor. So before shopping for decorations—or pulling old ones out of storage—forage for pretty pieces in your own backyard. In fact, putting a tree in every room can be a great way to spread holiday cheer throughout your space. “I love putting up a Christmas tree in each room,” Lisa Cini, president and CEO of Mosaic Design Studio, says.

The stamp art features a series of overlapping geometric shapes that mimic the symmetry of floral patterns found in nature. The watercolor background and the glimmer of the foil-stamped design and typography create a sophisticated look. The stamps were designed and created by the firm Spaeth Hill.

Feel the winter chillAn icy combination of turquoise, silvers, lime green and cobalt blue unite to bring a crisp, cool modern feel which will look beautiful through the holiday season. How about an indoor Christmas tree, decorated with ribbons and other swanky things? Indoor garlands and wreaths are perfect for lighting up other areas like stairways, doors, pillars, and gates. You can dress up any nook and cranny of your home—just take a look at this space from Havenly.

Hang a Peg Rail Wreath

Garlands make a classic addition to any holiday décor scheme. And you don’t have to stick with the store-bought stuff. Stock up on some greens at your local market—or grab some from your backyard—and layer them to create your own garlands. Hanukkah A new stamp celebrating the joyous Jewish holiday of Hanukkah will be issued in 2024. The art is a graphic depiction of a hanukiah, the nine-branch candelabra used only at Hanukkah, with all candles lighted, signifying the last evening of the holiday. The artwork is created mostly in blue and white, common Hanukkah colors.

Follow suit by arranging your own holiday heirlooms in a festive tableau. A set of petite topiaries, grouped together and decked out in whimsical red ribbon. Make every room feel instantly more cozy and festive by lighting all the candles. Go for a mix of heights and trail some ivy along the base to add in some greenery. Another super easy way to bring some festive vibes into your living room is to switch up your cushions. And we aren't just talking full on cheesy holiday cushions, if you like a more subtle look, add in some faux fur cushions, maybe a touch of dark green and red.

Shelby Girard, the brand’s vice president of creative and design, beautified this radiator with a garland, string lights, and minimalist stockings. We know it might not be that practical to have a full on tree in your kitchen but why not try adding a garland or two – they take up zero room and bring in just as much of a festive feel. String them along your shelves or create a Christmas window display for an even more festive touch.

“There is something special about seeing your name on a stocking and knowing there will be a little surprise in there for you,” Lisa Cini says. And if you don’t want to swap out the stockings you already have, try hanging a personalized charm on each one. Avid plant parents will be delighted to learn that you can actually propagate plants inside glass ornaments—assuming your Christmas tree gets enough light. So trim a few cuttings from a thriving plant, and slip them inside some water-filled ornaments. Avoid overfilling, and hang your ornaments with care, otherwise your ornaments may be prone to spilling.

“Try incorporating holiday color schemes and/or patterns into your bedding,” Maria Gerlach says. That could mean snagging a bright red bedspread, or it could mean snuggling up in some plaid flannel sheets. This issuance encourages the protection of sea turtles, one of the oldest groups of animals on Earth. These ancient mariners can migrate long distances, sometimes crossing entire oceans.

Create this sweet scheme by tying ribbons to the branches and pair your pink decor with silver and gold metallic touches to bring in some sparkle too. We love this asymmetric look though, with the large houseplant, it's unexpected because of the height but definitely adds interest to the space and a clear focal point. 'This is a purely magical trend combining icy blues, pinks and champagne golds. Whimsical woodland prints give an enchanting ‘fantastical’ feel.' says Julie Varma, senior director, George Home. The festive period is the perfect opportunity to add rustic elements into the home, without it looking too shabby or novel.

Add a pop of décor to every room in your home by hanging a wreath in every window. “Nothing beats the charm of a simple wreath on every window,” Mary Maloney, interior designer and owner of Bee's Knees Interior Design, says. If you can’t stand the thought of a kitsch-covered tree, consider relegating your heirlooms to the mantel, instead.

Rustic Decor with Fir Cuttings

Transitioning Fall into WinterWarm colors of golds, coppers, red, lime green, burnt orange blend together to create a bright contemporary feel that will take your holiday décor from November through December. Traditional with a contemporary twistGet ready for a traditional holiday with colors of red, green, blue, and gold, mixed together using predominantly ornaments. Entryways are a great spot to go “ham” for the holidays. And, if you’re blessed with a double-height lobby like style maven Kelly Wearstler, you can bring your Christmas decor to new heights by hanging a simple evergreen garland from the ceiling. And with a little wire, you can create an abstract, torquing look with signature drama, like Wearstler did here. If you want to stray away from the classic red and green or snowy whites, you need to check out the rest of this Christmas house.

Totally free Christmas design resources to help create the perfect holiday including clip art, backgrounds, fonts, borders, images and more. They’re textured and structural, and they can easily serve as a pop of décor. “One great natural option is to use pinecones,” Esther Dormer says. “I like to add glitter to some and to leave some plain.” And Mary Maloney agrees, noting that you can add pinecones to your garlands to make them look more textured and dynamic. “My favorite Christmas décor is very much intertwined with family traditions,” Andi Morse says.

All six are listed and protected under the Endangered Species Act. Derry Noyes, an art director for USPS, designed the stamps and stamp pane using existing images. Garden Delights These stamps will be available for mailers who enjoy adorning their cards and letters with beautiful stamps depicting nature scenes. In each of the four photographs, a different female ruby-throated hummingbird hovers next to either a zinnia, cigar flower, spotted touch-me-not or sunflower. Greg Breeding, an art director for USPS, designed the stamps using existing photographs by wildlife photographer Ben King. Love The 2024 Love stamp features a stylized bird in flight bearing a message of love in its beak.

We love this circus-style idea which uses the wall arch, red curtain and a set of string lights to create a nostalgic scheme that most of us can relate to. Dig out those hula hoops from the garage and repurpose them as props for this seasonal setup. From the front door to the entryway, living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and beyond, there are ideas to suit every space and style. Looking for a way to make your gifts even more decorative? Your front door is the first thing a person will see when visiting your home. So make sure it sets the tone for your holiday décor scheme.

Pick a neutral color scheme for an understated look

“Nothing hits you faster when walking into a home than the smell of the holidays,” Maria Gerlach, lead interior designer at Retro Interiors, says. So stock up on festive candles, snag an essential oil diffuser, or keep a pot of hot cider going on your stove at all times. Our living rooms tend to get all the holiday décor love. But adding décor to unexpected places—like your bathroom—can be a great way to make a statement.

We have the excitement, vision, and expertise to lay out the perfect lighting display to suit your home, family, and budget. Bedrooms, after all, are the venue for those visions of sugarplums. Drape a garland over the foot of your bed for fuss-free festivity, like this look from Frontgate.

By assigning color to various wavelengths, the digitized image allows us to see a landscape otherwise invisible to the human eye. Red areas toward the end of the pillars show burgeoning stars ejecting raw materials as they form, while the relatively small red orbs scattered throughout the image show newly born stars. $1 Floral Geometry In 2024, a new Floral Geometry stamp, denominated at $1, will be available for purchase. The stamp will complement the similarly designed $2 and $5 stamps issued in 2022 and the $10 stamp issued in 2023. The stamps lend an elegant and contemporary appearance to packages, large envelopes and other mailings.

Lining your mantel with holiday cards may be an obvious choice. But it’s the kind of tried-and-true tradition that never gets old. “Growing up in Southern California, I was fascinated by snowy Christmases that I saw on TV—magical, silvery-white winters,” James Stanley says. Because of this, he swears by a white-flocked Christmas tree. And he recommends topping the silvery-white beauties with a mix of shiny and matte ornaments.

And as a bonus, you won't have to take them down on December 26. Just be sure to exercise caution—don’t put anything flammable next to anything hot. Escape into our magical forest lightly sprinkled with snow.Botanical elements of eucalyptus leaves, echeverias, pine cones, berries and birch sticks nestle in the snow dusted branches.

If you're resigned to small living room ideas forever (or perhaps embracing them), you may not have the room for a full size Christmas tree or anywhere to store the decorations the rest of the year. This is a great idea if the kids want to get involved with decorating a tree (just not YOUR Christmas tree in your living room). Create a Christmas tree that takes up zero room (perfect for a child's room or a kitchen) by drawing one onto a blackboard wall. As an alternative Christmas tree idea, you could even use some Command Hooks to hang actual decorations from it. Kitsch Christmas tree decorations are a fab option for the vintage look, but opt for muted, smoky colors rather than bolds (which will look too contemporary).

Etsy have some lovely 1950s Christmas decorations if you are after the real thing. Dark, moody interiors are all over Instagram, and if you're well into the look, but aren't sure how to match it with your Christmas decor scheme, we have some really easy ideas. And don't forget to use your light boxes to create a custom message for the family too. A great idea for apartment Christmas decor, it's one way to create mystery and excitement in your entryway. The start of the holiday season gets earlier every year, so make sure you're guest ready with the best velvet sofas for your family and friends to take a seat on.

They were saved from demolition and rebuilt at the museum site along the Arroyo Seco. Historic residences at the museum include the Hale House, Valley Knudsen House, John Ford House, Perry Mansion and the Octagon House. The buildings serve as a perfect background to educate the public about the everyday lives of Southern Californians from the Civil War to the early 20th Century. Guided tours of the museum are supplemented by living history performances, educational programs, hands-on training, exhibitions and special events. Los Angeles, often referred to as the epicenter of architectural innovation, boasts a rich history of mid-century modern homes.

They each worked in aviation (Buck in sales, Carlotta as a receptionist), had previous marriages, and were strapping, tall, and extremely good looking—California Apollonians out of central casting. Back home in L.A., as the newlyweds pondered their future, they became preoccupied with a promontory of land jutting out like the prow of a ship from Woods Drive in the Hollywood Hills, about 125 feet above Sunset Boulevard. It was as conspicuous as it was forbidding, visible from the couple’s house on nearby Hillside Avenue. “This lot was in pure view—every morning, every night,” Carlotta Stahl recalled.

Locals called it Pecker Point, presumably because it was a prime makeout venue. For the Stahls, it became the blank screen on which they projected their dreams of a life together, a place to build a future, a family, and a house like no other. Ellwood’s design for the single-family house was commissioned by couple Martin and Eva Zimmerman in 1949 and was featured in Progressive Architecture magazine shortly after, according to the Eichler Network, which covers mid-century California homes. In 2004, the house changed hands to its last owners, couple Sam and Hilda Newman-Rolfe. The single-story home and its grounds have since been cleared and in its place will be a massive home in the modern farmhouse style that has come to dominate US suburbs. Chris Pratt has drawn ire from architecture aficionados after news broke that the actor and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, had razed a historic, mid-century modern home to make way for a sprawling 15,000-sq-ft mansion.

The Eichler Network, which covers mid-century homes in California, lamented the destruction. Visitors came from various Pennsylvania counties, including Fayette, Allegheny, Westmoreland, Greene, Lebanon, Butler, Beaver, Lawrence, and Washington, and also Wheeling, Weirton and Morgantown, W.Va., and Ohio. The Meeting House was lined with demonstrators and hands-on activities, such as quill pen and slate writing, weaving, and wool felting and dyeing. The Whiskey Rebellion Education and Visitor Center was open for walk-through tours while the checkerboard was a fun stop for most.

Schindler in 1921, the Schindler House in West Hollywood set the stage for mid-century modern design principles. As well, its innovative use of space, interconnected rooms, and strong geometric lines paved the way for the mid-century movement. In March 1954, Clarence “Buck” Stahl and Carlotta May Gates drove from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and got married in a chapel.

The house is located in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, across the street from Pratt’s mother-in-law, former first lady of California Maria Shriver. The historic house will be replaced by a modern farmhouse designed by architect Ken Ungar, Architectural Digest reported, and is now in the early stages of construction. Until its completion, Pratt is waiting it out with his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, in a $32 million estate in Los Angeles’ Pacific Palisades neighborhood. The Stahl House (aka Case Study House #22) was designed by architect Pierre Koenig and built in 1959.

Because the seller lived several hours away, she would rarely visit, which is why the property was so deteriorated, the couple says. The property in question is a 2,757-square-foot single-family home built in 1961. Pratt, along with his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger, purchased the 1950 Zimmerman house last year. The Los Angeles home was designed by Craig Ellwood, and the couple reportedly bought it for $12.5million. And its distinctive design has been featured in movies and magazines, making it an emblem of architectural innovation. Designed by Richard Neutra in 1929, the Lovell Health House in Los Feliz predates the mid-century movement but greatly influenced it. With its innovative use of space, interconnected rooms, and strong geometric lines, this home served as a precursor to mid-century modern design principles. Ellwood, born as Jon Nelson Burke in Texas in 1922, was an informally trained but influential Los Angeles–based architect whose career spanned the early 1950s through the mid-1970s, according to a biography by Architectuul. He gained fame through his eye-catching designs and quirky personality, bolstered by his ambitions in acting, modeling, and self-promotion. He designed several homes in Los Angeles, and the destruction of one of the few that remain is part of the considerable backlash.

If the proposed repeal wins final approval from the Republican-controlled Legislature and is signed into law by Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, a 2022 statute banning the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy would become the prevailing abortion law. Even so, there would likely be a period where all abortion is outlawed, because the repeal won’t take effect until 90 days after the end of the legislative session, likely in mid-summer. Arizona Republicans have been under intense pressure from some conservatives in their base, who firmly support the abortion ban, even as it’s become a liability with swing voters who will decide crucial races including the presidency, the U.S.

Designed by Richard Neutra in 1946, the Kaufmann House in Palm Springs is a striking example of desert modernism. In addition, its horizontal lines, flat roof, and floor-to-ceiling glass walls blur the lines between the interior and the arid desert landscape. The 0.83-acre home once featured an elaborate garden landscaped by Garrett Eckbo, and inside, offered five bedrooms and three bathrooms in a 2,770-square-foot single-story space, according to the Robb Report. Material choices—plush carpet, terrazzo, and glazed tile—were designed to ground the home in a specific time and place, while also replacing generic additions that covered key design details. One of the biggest challenges was removing paint from original timber ceilings, posts, and beams.

Senate candidate Kari Lake had urged Arizona lawmakers to ease the restrictions. But until Wednesday, most state House Republicans repeatedly used procedural votes to block repeal, each time drawing condemnation from Democratic President Joe Biden, who has made his support for abortion rights central to his reelection campaign. Pratt’s new home has been designed by architect Ken Ungar, who typically specialises in high-end modern farmhouse-style properties, according to Architectural Digest (via The Guardian). Last year, the couple purchased the 1950 Zimmerman house, designed by the architect Craig Ellwood, in Los Angeles’s Brentwood neighborhood for $12.5m.

After he and Schwarzenegger began dating, Pratt shared photos of the lovebirds enjoying time out on the farm, and the author and motivational speaker even once gifted Pratt a pair of pigs for his birthday. “We named them Tim and Faith because they’re beautiful and their love is palpable and inspiring,” he captioned a photo. ” Pratt has shared that he loves “biking and running…and ocean swimming” out on the farm, as “it really clears [his] mind.” Pratt and Schwarzenegger still own this property. Lacey’s original plan was a surface overhaul, but once the trio dug in, they saw the potential in a layout change. “We realized that opening up the kitchen, adding a guest bathroom, and doing a complete primary bath overhaul could make the house really special,” she says. Adding a generous wet room in sumptuous hunter green terrazzo and matching tile with a hammered copper Japanese-style soaking tub transformed the bathroom from awkward to certifiably dreamy.

The residence, with landscaping by Garrett Eckbo – who has been described as the pioneer of modern landscaping – had previously been featured in Progressive Architecture magazine. When this residential house was built by Vienna-born Rudolf Schindler back in inspired by a recent trip to Yosemite with his wife - it was extremely unconventional at the time for a place to live. In reality, it was meant to be a cooperative live-work space between two families, much like a camp site.

“As an avid traveler, having midcentury-modern pieces that span from Denmark to Mexico to Brazil to the U.S. feels really exciting,” Lacey says. She calls out a 1960s Baldwin piano, Brazilian Jangada lounge chair, Mario Bellini couch, and live-edge burl coffee table that together spark a warm, worldly energy. The multiple listings information is provided by The MLS/CLAW from a copyrighted compilation of listings.

While cleaning out the home, they found some of the original furniture, old photos of what the house looked like before, and a record player that was hooked up to speakers all over the house. "It was in a state that probably no one should have lived there," Phipps says. "She would come to visit and take things out, but no one lived there for years." The couple plans to use the two years they have to repay their private loan to fix up the house as much as possible and then refinance to get a traditional mortgage. "People were very shocked at how we were able to get that price, especially in that area," Phipps says.

During the tour, which arrives on the heels of the trio’s long-awaited debut album Paradise Again, Live Nation will bring back a vintage collector’s item for many an ardent music fan — the ticket stub – in the form of an NFT collectible. The previously announced trek round the world kicks off July 29 at Miami’s FTX Arena. The Swedish super-group sold out New York’s landmark venue, Madison Square Garden, in nine minutes. “They defined a genre in such a specific way.” The marquee acts of their era — Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Skrillex and deadmau5 — survived by evolving their sounds and thus, well, never really going away. More than any other act in modern dance music, Swedish House Mafia set the tone for the EDM boom of the early 2010s, taking the massive “big room” house sound cultivated in Europe to the United States. All this made it a major heartbreak for the dance community when the group announced their intentions to split in 2012, officially signing off after the last concert of their “One Last Tour” at the 2013 edition of Miami’s Ultra Music Festival.

It’s kind of attached to his face.” The company’s experience with large-scale touring should help, too, with a planned 2022 global outing that will mostly hit Live Nation-affiliated or -aligned arenas and stadiums. A loose plan emerged to get back in the studio and tour, but the months after Ultra proved messy. Thomson, who had steered the act since its inception, sensed that Angello might want Braun to co-manage the reunited group, according to a source familiar with the matter. Swedish House Mafia has never done anything less than full throttle, and even its last goodbye was outsized. In January 2024, Tomorrowland announced Swedish House Mafia will be performing at the 20 year anniversary festival called Life. In 2022, the group also received credit for co-writing and co-producing "Sacrifice" and "How Do I Make You Love Me?" off of the Weeknd's fifth studio album Dawn FM, on which 'Moth to a Flame' was featured on the Alternate World edition of the album.

The track has been used during various television programmes around the world. It was featured as one of the opening tracks during the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden. It was performed by a group of children in the British soap opera Emmerdale at the funeral of the character Gemma Andrews. The song is playable in the video games Just Dance 2014 and Just Dance 2015.

The song was included on their tour One Last Tour, which ended in Miami where they parted ways for five years. Taking place this Saturday, April 27th, the Swedish House Mafia seem to have gotten their way and the Brooklyn Mirage will open a week earlier than planned. Fans can sign up now for the presale and will have the ability to get tickets this Thursday.

Either way, two months after closing out Coachella’s mainstage after headliners The Black Keys, they announced their farewell tour. As dinner draws to a close, Angello and Ingrosso return from their second smoking break. Paradise Again, says Angello, is “just the beginning,” adding that they have enough music for a couple more albums yet. “You always want people to like your music, otherwise you wouldn’t play it to them,” says Ingrosso. “But the vision of the album, for me, it’s not really important if it sells 400 million [copies] or 10.” As Angello points out, they’ve already achieved something that, for so long, was more elusive. “With [Slaiby] always being available and his team always chasing us, it works really well,” says Axwell.

As a producer and DJ myself during the 00s and 10s, I went to individual and full-fledged Swedish House Mafia shows all around the world since around 2007, and everywhere they toured people were enjoying the hell out of their equally hyped, epic and explosive shows. ‘Moth To A Flame’ by Swedish House Mafia featuring The Weeknd is out now via Republic Records. While they confess that they’d love to have a legacy like the ’70s legends, their biggest test yet lies ahead of them. Next year Swedish House Mafia will take their first proper album across the globe, starting off with what’s sure to be an phenomenal, euphoric and overdue headline slot at Coachella 2022, alongside Travis Scott and Rage Against The Machine. Once Angello had moved back to Sweden following Trump’s 2016 election, he met up with Axwell and Ingrosso and it immediately felt natural. They longed to be “standing on stage as three brothers again,” explains Angello.

Although the venue attracts the biggest names in dance music, its location, and open-air design mean that it can only fully operate several months out of the year to avoid the cold winters of the region. Of course, little things such as schedules and opening weekends can be adjusted when the right names come calling. Although it appeared as though deadmau5 would be opening the 2024 season in Brooklyn in early May, the Swedish House Mafia had their own plans.

He has been very successful on his own—both commercially and in the “underground” scene—albeit not quite with the same commercial success as SHM. The group’s website listed their final show being November 24, 2012 at the Friends Arena in Sweden. Prior to that, they would headline Tomorrowland in Belgium and finish up their residency at Ushuaia in Ibiza.

Swedish House Mafia, who played on Friday, was billed ahead of Arctic Monkeys on the second line. Despite being billed underneath The Black Keys, they actually performed after them and closed out the main stage. By this point, Swedish House Mafia had captivated the dance world in full and established themselves as true festival headliners. “Greyhound”, which was complimented by a futuristic music video, capitalized on their already-strong buzz and climbed up to No. 11 on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs.

The track bolted to No. 3 on the Dance Club Songs charts, thanks to its thudding, descending synth line, trance-like wooshes and Pharrell’s soulful vocal interjections. As if Swedish House Mafia weren’t enough of a super-group already, the trio united with Dutch DJ Laidback Luke and vocal powerhouse Deborah Cox for this progressive house treat. On June 23, 2012, Swedish House Mafia announced their split and revealed that their remaining shows listed on their website would be their last. “Today we want to share with you that the tour we are about to go on will be our last, they said. We came, we raved, we loved.” The news caught much of the dance world by surprise, but behind the magical curtain, things were not as glossy as they seemed.

The track was the first taster of ‘Paradise Again’, Swedish House Mafia’s first proper album. While 2010’s ‘Until One’ and 2012’s ‘Until Now’ were both singles collections, ‘Paradise Again’ is “a whole body of work”, according to Angello. Well, according to Ingrosso, Swedish House Mafia actually made four albums that became one after writing 45 songs. “They might become something else someday,” he starts, explaining that the vibe of some of those tracks just wasn’t right for the record. That summer of 2018, Thomson resigned, and she and the Swedes amicably parted ways.

While Swedish House Mafia’s remix of this Coldplay smash isn’t an SHM song per se, we couldn’t stand leaving it off our list completely. Swedish House Mafia take the dance leanings of “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” — particularly, the euphoric keys underneath the chorus — one step further, layering on shattering synths, ample percussion and a blissful new hook. Swedish House Mafia promptly decided to split up in 2012 as they arguably were enjoying the peak of their commercial success, which is likely also what sparked the decision to bring the SHM wheels to a halt and focus on their individual careers instead. The members have all described the period leading up to the split as “draining”, and the break as something they all needed.

SEE INSIDE: Al Capone's home on Chicago's South Side for sale

A local landmark known for its glamorous facilities and ties to Presidential politics, the Blackstone Hotel was apparently also a haunt of Alphonse Capone’s. According to the hotel’s own history, Capone frequented the hotel barbershop because it was windowless. No chance for an assassin to do his dirty work with no lines of sight. Let’s kick things off with a venue that still looks, feels, and (most importantly) sounds like it did in Al Capone’s Chicago. The Green Mill Cocktail Lounge is the beating heart of Uptown’s historic entertainment district.

In 1926, when two of Capone’s sworn enemies were spotted in Cicero, Capone ordered his men to gun them down. Unbeknownst to Capone, William McSwiggin, known as the “Hanging Prosecutor,” who had tried to prosecute him for a previous murder, was with the two marked men and all three were killed. Fed up with Chicago’s gang-dominated lawlessness, the public clamored for justice. The police had no evidence for the murders, so instead they raided Capone’s businesses, where they gathered documentation that would later be used to bolster charges against him of income-tax evasion. In response, Capone called for a “Peace Conference” among the city’s criminals, and an agreement was reached to stop the violence.

Curbed Miami main menu

In the 1920s Miami had a boost in tourism because, for the first time, middle class (or at least upper middle class) Americans had the time and money to travel for leisure. Union workers were getting more paid vacations, pensions and fringe benefits that were previously unheard of. Capone moved into the home with his family on Aug. 8, 1923, according to a listing by Re/Max, a few years after Capone arrived in Chicago from New York to aid crime boss Johnny Torrio. Tucked onto a sleepy street in South Side’s Park Manor neighborhood, the Capone home is a completely unpretentious two-flat.

There’s also a pond with a lighthouse, bridge and small cave made of red coral—something most people probably don’t have in their backyard. At the time, Glaser told the Wall Street Journal of his plans to tear down the 7,500-square-foot Palm Island residence in favor of a modern build. The Miami home where Al Capone took his final breath in 1947 after suffering a heart attack is being saved from demolition after a spirited campaign by locals was launched to preserve the estate. Sonny passed away in 2004, and the gun was passed to his daughters Diane and Barbara. The Certificate of Authenticity was signed and dated April 2024 by Diane Capone Pette, granddaughter of Al Capone, and photographs taken at the time of that signing will also be provided to the buyer.

Aiello disappeared with some family members to Trenton, NJ, from whence he continued his campaign against Capone and Lombardo. In its analysis of the law, Florida Politics notes that numerous iconic buildings and neighborhoods in and around Miami are now without protection, including the Art Deco design district, the Versace mansion on South Beach and the Delano hotel. His beachfront home was his escape as well as the place he died in 1947. Chicago’s history is so fascinating, you could spend a lifetime uncovering its secrets…I’m willing to give it a try! In US History from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and then pursued doctoral studies in Urban History at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I love to learn new aspects of Chicago’s rich history and then share my knowledge as a tour guide with Chicago Detours.

The Chicago gangster was rumored to have hideaways all across the Midwest and Florida, but this house on South Beach’s Palm Island was legendary. He reportedly planned the 1929 St. Valentine’s Day Massacre here, and conveniently, he was at home in Miami when the Chicago slaughter went down. To make matters worse, the Great Miami Hurricane ripped through the city later that year—starting what some say is the beginning of the Great Depression in Miami. As Greater Miami's economy was clawing to come back, Miami Beach was one of the first districts to rebuild itself given its mass tourist appeal. By the mid-1920s Miami Beach was known as the premiere beach resort destination in the United States, according to Paul George, which coincided with the massive real estate boom that transformed the area. The tremendous building boom in Greater Miami reached its peak in 1925 and dramatically collapsed in 1926.

Tax evasion

Capone’s many customers lived in similar homes all across the working class “white ethnic” Chicago neighborhoods. For all the associations with glamour and guts, this humble spot may best epitomize Al Capone’s Chicago. According to listing agent Ryan Smith, the property is one of the first homes Capone purchased in Chicago. The listing happens to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the "St. Valentine's Day Massacre," when seven rivals of Capone's gang were gunned down in a garage in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood on February 14, 1929. A home where infamous gangster Al Capone once lived with his wife, mother and sister is on the market. The 6,077 square-foot four-bedroom property has now been bought by developer Todd Michael Glaser, who recently purchased, and then demolished, Jeffrey Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion.

Critics, however, say the law opens up exactly that possibility and is another example of a DeSantis power grab. “I have a lot of early memories of playing there and being in the pool with my dad and my uncle, it was an unbelievable piece of property. It was a symbol of what Miami Beach was back in the beginning, and when you were in the house you’d feel old Florida. Much of the home, actually, is frozen in time from the 1935 shooting. Still owned by the family who once rented the place to the Barkers, the property recently hit the market as an non-MLS listing, with a suggested starting price of $1 million.

Miami press at the time was also excited to report and propagandize Capone's famous spaghetti and steak parties, at which according to Paul George, alcohol was not served. After being released from Alcatraz in ill health because of paresis, a partial paralysis resulting from syphilis, he lived in the island house until his death in 1947. The onetime feared boss of the Chicago mob died of cardiac arrest in a guest room. In 1928, a 29-year-old Capone paid $40,000 for the house, which served, for a time, as a sunny refuge from the bitter Chicago winters.

Those additions included a two-story pool cabana and a gated sentry house from which armed guards would watch the road outside. The elegant century-old property on one of Miami’s most exclusive islands was quietly razed earlier this month. The take-down followed the enactment of a law from the DeSantis administration last summer stripping municipalities of their power to prevent the demolition of certain properties, regardless of historic designation. Torrio moved out of his home and left for Europe, only returning to New York to testify for Capone during his tax evasion trial. Al Capone bought this Miami house (obscured by trees in this photo) in 1928 and died there in 1947. According to historian Paul George from HistoryMiami, speaking at a press event at the mansion, Miami had already experienced a rise and fall by the time Al Capone reached our shores.

Capone was never indicted for his racketeering but was finally brought to justice for income-tax evasion in 1931. Capone’s life captured the public imagination, and his gangster persona has been immortalized in the many movies and books inspired by his exploits. Federal authorities became intent on jailing Capone and charged him with twenty-two counts of tax evasion. During a highly publicized case, the judge admitted as evidence Capone's admissions of his income and unpaid taxes, made during prior (and ultimately abortive) negotiations to pay the government taxes he owed. After conviction, he replaced his defense team with experts in tax law, and his grounds for appeal were strengthened by a Supreme Court ruling, but his appeal ultimately failed.

The South Carolina-based auction house listed the “Sweetheart” with provenance and documentation, and noted they estimate the final auction price to be as high as $2,000,000 to $3,000,000. The auction will take place on May 18, at 3 p.m., and has already generated global interest. Those looking to bid on this unique item have been encouraged to arrange an appointment for a viewing, according to Richmond Auctions.

It was here that Capone would meet both his future wife, Mary (Mae) Coughlin, and his mob mentor, numbers racketeer Johnny Torrio. The waterfront Spanish-style estate, located at 93 Palm Ave., was built in 1922 by brewing magnate Clarence Busch and eventually became owned by the notorious Prohibition-era gangster. MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Much to the dismay of local preservationists, famed gangster Al Capone’s one-time home on Miami Beach’s Palm Island has met the wrecking ball. “It’s government overreach, and it’s going to have a detrimental effect on the character of our city that we’re already seeing with the Capone house,” said Sarah Giller Nelson, chair of the Miami Beach design review board. DeSantis signed the law, formally the resiliency and safe structure act, in May of last year.

Texas developer is building dozens of homes without a single permit

Every sufficiently old building east of the Alleghenies claims that Washington slept there. Similarly, dozens of old buildings in Chicago seem to claim that Capone drank and/or killed someone there. With the 90th anniversary of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre right around the corner, we thought it was worth finding out which extant buildings were really a part of Al Capone’s Chicago. Plus, if you want to visit these sites several of them have some pretty awesome historic architecture, too. The Spanish Colonial-style waterfront mansion features views of Biscayne Bay, and boasts a private beach, a gatehouse and a 30-by-60-foot pool with a cabana, according to the listing.

Little is Left of Al Capone’s Chicago

Deirdre Marie Capone, the mobster’s great-niece and only living family member with memories of the “majestic” mansion, said she was saddened by its demise. He was convicted of tax evasion in 1931, and spent eight years in prison,  before returning to his Palm Island home in 1939, where he lived until his death from cardiac arrest in 1947. “While the most spectacular gangland slaying in mob history was going down in Chicago,” Ron Chepesiuk writes in Gangsters of Miami, Al Capone was 1,300 miles away, throwing a party at his mansion in Florida. It was a perfect alibi, Chepesiuk writes, as Capone’s buddies in 1929 Chicago machine-gunned their rivals.

When not galivanting around, he stayed at the original Capone family home with his mother, Theresa, and his wife, Mae. The family had relocated here in the 1920s from New York as Al’s particular career path led him to the Windy City. Today it’s a private residence, so it’s best not to go ringing the doorbell unless you’re looking to buy it. He died on the property in 1947, no longer the head of a crime empire. Last year, a firm called MB America shelled out $8 million to buy the property, which had fallen into disrepair.

Now, 86 years following the so-called Valentine’s Day Massacre, the party-filled Capone mansion is sparkling once more after a property investment firm has restored it. The gun, often called “Sweetheart” by Capone, was his constant companion, according to his granddaughter, Diane Capone. It gained the adoring nickname thanks to it saving his life numerous times while he racked up notoriety as one of the most infamous names in American history. He later failed to make a court appearance after his attorney claimed he suffered a nervous breakdown.

While Capone ruled Chicago, Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel ruled New York, and then later moved on to L.A. Siegel created an empire of bootlegging and gambling, and began one of the first organized hit companies "Murder, Inc." before he settled in Los Angeles. In L.A., Siegel rubbed shoulders with the celebrity elite, even dating a few starlets, as he also planned to expand a gambling empire in Las Vegas. Many mobsters, however, chose to live their daily lives rather anonymously in homes more fit for the family man than the big "boss." He returned to the Miami house after prison, and spent the rest of his life there.

I’m fascinated by how people latch on to old architecture but happily pave over others. My background is in theater and performance and I’ve been a tour guide here for more than 10 years. Currently I’m finishing my Master’s in Public History at Loyola University because I love to teach the history of this scrappy city. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a lifelong resident, the vibrant history and modern majesty of Chicago never ceases to amaze.

Capone showed signs of neurosyphilis early in his sentence and became increasingly debilitated before being released after almost eight years of incarceration. The 6,100-square-foot mansion’s ostentatious size (for the time) and value seemed to prove he was more than his tax returns made him out to be. He did prison time for tax evasion but kept the mansion all the while, and he retired to Palm Island after his release.

Al Capone came to Miami Beach in 1927 and bought the Palm Island property in 1928 from Clarence M. Busch (not to be confused with the famous brewing Busch family from St. Louis). It is said that Capone was drawn to the property because it reminded him of the sunny shores of Italy (although apparently he had never set foot on Italian soil). The L-shaped 6,077-square-foot main structure sits on a 30,000 square-foot waterfront site, according to Miami-Dade property records.

al capone house

As I mentioned at the top, Capone long ago achieved a mythic status here in Chicago. Even while he was alive, the press attention created a larger-than-life persona for the man who’d been a two-bit hoodlum just years prior. Yet, as I wrote in a previous blog post on the site of the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, surprisingly few buildings remain which directly connect to his actions here in Chicago.

Its sponsor, the Republican state senator Bryan Avila, insisted the law was needed to hasten the removal of dangerous or worn-out buildings at risk of collapse, and was not intended to smooth a path for greedy developers. “Ocean Drive is not going to get bulldozed,” he told legislative colleagues in April. Original features such as a striking all-black art deco bathroom were refurbished, along with additions made by Capone after he bought the house for $40,000 in 1928.

Some even considered him a kind of Robin Hood figure, or as anti-Prohibition resentment grew, a dissident who worked on the side of the people. However, in later years, as Capone’s name increasingly became connected with brutal violence, his popularity waned. “Although we understood and expected that the demolition would happen it is still heartbreaking to see this really important part of our history knocked down and bulldozed,” he said. The property was later sold to 93 Palm Residence LLC, managed by Coral Gables accountant Toni Alam, for $15.5 million in 2021.

Al Capone had more money than he had sense, which is really saying something since he was a criminal mastermind. He was able to use that dough to buy a palatial place in Miami, a massive mansion in New Jersey, and a comparatively modest brick two-flat in Chicago's Lincoln Park Manor neighborhood. Per the Inquirer, this humble Illinois home measured 2,820 square feet and had an apartment on each floor. Curbed Chicago writes that according to urban legend, the brick two-flat had a secret tunnel to his detached garage, but if it did exist, it no longer does. Our virtual tours uplift meetings and inspire connections for conferences, corporate groups, and universities.

With few exceptions, it removes the ability of municipalities anywhere in Florida to block the demolition of any coastal or flood zone structure deemed a hazard, or not up to code, even if it is recognized locally as historic. “That’s essentially what happened here, it lost whatever protection it had. The ghost of Al Capone was vivid in Greater Miami all this time and with the demolition we lose a sense of place, we lose a picture and an idea of what things were like in a certain time, and we lose that idea of who lived there and how they lived. Like Torrio, Frank Rio was a gangster closely tied to Capone, and he's believed to be the person who carried out the Valentine's Day Massacre. He was described as one of Capone's most loyal and trusted hitmen and was once considered to be the successor to Capone, but he rather slowly stepped back from his involvement in the mob and died of a heart attack in 1935. Before there was Capone, there was Johnny Torrio, an Italian-American mobster who is credited with beginning the Chicago gangster scene in the early 1920s.

First, the city has tried very hard to scrub this bloody history from its popular legacy. Mayor Daley II even tried to block the gangster tours from having downtown storefronts. Which is entirely understandable, even if it’ll likely never really work.

Tax evasion eventually brought down the crime titan of illegal booze, brothels and gambling. Now, the property investment firm that bought it last year has just this autumn completed its renovation work, including restoring parts of the home to its Prohibition-era glory days. Needless to say, Capone did not receive a warm welcome from the Miami authorities. Many were outraged by his presence – leading to multiple questionable arrests of the man. According to Paul George, Florida Governor Doyle Carlton told every leader in every county to do what they could to prevent the gangster's move into Miami.
